Do you have a driver's license?

A 'driver's license' is permission from the government to drive.  In many places you have to pass a test and then they give you an identification card.  In normal speech we just call this a license.  Notice the following:

  1. My picture on my driver's license is terrible.
  2. His parents didn't let him get his driver's license until he was eighteen.

We use the question phrase 'how long' to ask about the amount of time a person has done something.  Notice the following:

  1. So, how long did you work there?
  2. She wants to know how long you've lived here.

You have to pass both the written and driving test to get a license.

A 'driving test' is the test you have to take to get your license.  In the U.S. there is a written test on a computer and then a driving test in a car with a person who scores your ability.  Notice the following:

  1. Did you take your driving test on your birthday?
  2. She failed her driving test the first time she took it.

  2. Your final exam score was close to perfect.

Todd: OK. Did you get a perfect score on your driving test?

Kerri: I was close to perfect, yeah. I can't remember my exact score but I remember it was pretty good.

Todd: Do all the members of your family drive?

Kerri: Yeah.
